-CULTURAL DIFFERENCES THAT I MAY ENCOUNTER AND HOW I WILL BE SOLVING THEM-

  • The beauty of people lies in their cultural differences. As an intern, I will immerse myself in the Turkish work culture, observing their day-to-day business operations. Cultural distinctions often stem from communication styles and social interactions. I anticipate encountering variances in collectiveness, particularly in terms of socializing with coworkers during breaks or forming friendships with them.

  • Cultural differences that I may encounter include varying attitudes towards hierarchy and authority, different approaches to conflict resolution, and distinct work-life balance practices. In Turkey, there might be a stronger emphasis on respect for hierarchy and seniority, which can influence decision-making processes and interactions with supervisors. Additionally, the approach to conflict resolution might be more indirect, with a preference for maintaining harmony and avoiding direct confrontation. The work-life balance might also differ, with more emphasis on family and social relationships outside of work.

  • While I naturally tend to be an individualistic person, I believe effective communication will be key to overcoming any cultural differences in this aspect. By being open and respectful towards different communication styles and social norms, I aim to build strong, collaborative relationships with my colleagues. Engaging in team activities, participating in social gatherings, and being attentive to non-verbal cues are some of the strategies I will employ to bridge any cultural gaps.

-STRATEGIES TO BUILD UP MY NETWORK-

  • Attending Networking Events: One effective strategy is to attend networking events, particularly those focused on the retail industry. These events provide a valuable opportunity to meet professionals, share insights, and establish connections with individuals who have similar interests and expertise.

  • Utilize Social Media (LinkedIn): Leveraging social media platforms like LinkedIn is crucial for building and maintaining professional relationships. By actively participating in discussions, sharing relevant content, and connecting with industry professionals, I can enhance my professional network and stay informed about industry trends.

  • Volunteer for Projects: Volunteering for projects within the workplace is another excellent way to engage with colleagues. By taking on additional responsibilities and collaborating on various initiatives, I can demonstrate my commitment and teamwork skills, which helps in building strong professional relationships.

  • Follow-up: Periodic follow-up is essential to maintain connections. Reaching out to colleagues and contacts to show genuine interest in their professional journey and developments helps in nurturing and sustaining these relationships over time.

 - COPING WITH MISSING PERSONAL SPACES AND PEOPLE-

  • Leaving my house in Eindhoven and friends in the Netherlands will undoubtedly leave a void. The familiarity and comfort of my Eindhoven home can be coped with by personalizing my new space and gradually establishing routines. This will create a sense of belonging and comfort in the new environment. As for my friends, maintaining strong connections through socializing, whether in person or virtually, will be key. Regular video calls, social media interactions, and planning visits can help maintain these bonds. I will also actively engage in social activities, join local groups, and nurture new relationships to help bridge the physical distance and ensure a sense of connection and support.
